Assessment and Reporting

To ensure that learning goals are achieved at Gardenvale Primary School, a variety of assessment processes are undertaken throughout the year. These take the form of both informal and formal processes. The informal assessment occurs through such methods as teacher observation, checklists, oral presentations, projects, anecdotal notes and student evaluation exercises and these activities are continuous throughout the year.

Formal assessment occurs through teacher devised tests and standardised tests, such as the government prescribed Achievement Improvement Monitor or A.I.M test, all of which are conducted at specific times throughout the year.

The purpose for assessing students is to:

- Ensure appropriate correlation between the curriculum focus and
  prescribed learning outcomes.
- Enable teachers to evaluate present curriculum and make the
  appropriate adjustments if necessary.
- Plan future curriculum for students based on meaningful and
  relevant outcomes.
- Provide information for parents through written reports and
  parent/teacher interviews regarding progress.
- Encourage students to monitor their own progress and take
  responsibility for their own learning.

Parents receive written reports in semester 1 and 2 and they are given the opportunity to formally discuss their child's needs and progress at Pastoral Care and Parent Teacher Interviews in terms one and two respectively.

Information on student progress and achievement is provided for parents in the form of:
  - An Information Evening in early February
  - A Pastoral Care interview in Term 1
  - First semester Interview in June
  - First semester written report end of Term 2
  - Second semester written report end of Term 4
  - Communication Books in Years 1 - 6

Parents are always welcome to discuss their child's progress / needs with the classroom teacher at any stage during the year. The school has a comprehensive reporting policy, which ensures that parents are kept informed of student progress. We currently use the QUICK VIC Assessment and Reporting Software Program, which allows teachers to electronically track and view student progress from Year Prep to Year 6 against Victorian Essential Learning Standards.

Quick Vic reporting software shows:
  - The progress the student has made over the relevant
    period (term, semester, and year)
  - How well the student is progressing in relation to what is
expected at that year level, including in terms of any national
    benchmarks which apply
  - How well the student is progressing in relation to other students
  - What the student, the parent and the teacher need do
    to improve that student's performance.

We encourage constant communication between school and home to ensure that suitable outcomes and appropriate student progress are achieved and the staff at Gardenvale Primary
